   i grew up in the ’90s so i’m a child of grunge, i got into Neil Young pretty recently- he’s fucking awesome! Rust Never Sleeps is an amazing album

   Such a great reply! A bit of humor in the middle of so much anger.
   Many people only hear what they want to hear, or believe they hear in music, political speeches, and many other forms of communication.
   But to see Neil sing this song several times over the years, and hearing the crowd sing along with only the line, “Keep on rockin’ in the free world,” while shaking their fists in the air toward Neil proves to me thay have no clue to his sarcasm.

   from what i’m aware of this isn’t really an optimistic song. i don’t think he’s using the term in that sense.

   Yes it is. That was the second album that really got me into Neil Young. After The Goldrush did it. And then I dug up my parents records and I found Decade. Good compilation–lol back when compilations were decent things.

    yeah Neil has said in interviews it is up the individual to interpret it, he wants them to think ‘what the f% is this about’…he wants them to think. The phrase is from his producer David Briggs, when they were deciding where to tour, he uttered this phrase to mean US and western Europe etc..
